Mount Vernon Estate Now Sells For Record $50M In Rare Listing

George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate

A section of George Washington’s original Mount Vernon home sold for $50 million, making it the most expensive residential transaction in DC history region ever!

Mount Vernon, George Washington’s house and last resting place, is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, about 15 miles south of Washington, DC

The Washingtons owned the estate until 1859, and four people have owned the estate since then. In 2014, Lockheed Martin CEO Robert Stevens and his wife Michelle Stevens acquired the estate, which stands in around 16 acres of land, for $18.6 million.

When the property went on the market in September 2020, it was expected to sell for $60 million. According to Mansion Global, the purchase was completed a year later, on the 29th of October, for $48 million, including $2 million for furniture and personal possessions.

The two-story Georgian home is made of wood, yet this siding is of broad and heavy boards paneled to resemble stone. Almost all the furnishings on the first floor and in Washington’s bed-chamber were preserved when Washington and family used the house.

The sold estate covers an impressive 16,000-square-foot riverfront mansion with seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms christened to the River View Estate. It is accessed through a stone-lined driveway that opens up to a grand hall, several sitting rooms, and an outside terrace.

“This property was part of the original 1,800 acres of land that America’s founding father acquired in 1760,” according to the American Horticultural Society, which nevertheless owns a significant share of the original site that is now a historical monument and museum.

The view of the Potomac is majestic through the windows that rise from floor to ceiling. The waterfront property features 400 feet of riverfront facade and a private dock. As a listing agent at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty puts it, “A visit to River View shows us of why Washington proudly said… ‘I would rather be on my farm than the emperor of the world.'”

Special features of the house include:

  • A gym with a panoramic view of the Potomac River.
  • An attached spa area with a sauna.
  • An indoor swimming pool.

A wood-paneled parlor area with access to groomed lawn and acres of beautiful vegetation is a standout feature of the property. According to the New York Times, they were based on historical plans for the estate of George Washington.

The sale also provides a 2,600-square-foot guest house, a studio apartment, and a carriage house, in addition to the mansion.
